GSM/3G network in Lärz

So I've been using a perfect little 3G phone for the last 17 yrs, and categorically refuse a smartphone. The new 4G pensioner's phone I've been forced to get is SO much worse functionality wise, and I'd be thrilled to revert back to my beloved old phone during the festival if possible (I can elsewhere).

Does anyone know if the GSM/3G network still is functional in Lärz?

3G is over and switched off everywhere in Germany. Not sure how well 2G will work at a huge festival, it probably won't.

Just came here to say that I feel you. I used my old Nokia phone as long as possible. Now, I switched to one of these 4G pensioner's phone as 4G is neccessary in some areas and I do not want a smartphone. This pensioner's phone looks like an old nokia, but has only power for like 2 days and can save 30 sms messages. I feel really fooled by this "new" technology, lol.

Just came here to say that I feel you. I used my old Nokia phone as long as possible. Aww, thank you so much for the commiseration! I'll trade you your 30 SMS for conversations and voice messages longer than 13 sek (yes, you read that correctly). My old phone had max 3 mins for MMS. You can imagine ...

Wtf I‘m a little shocked right now tbh. I‘m still using a smartphone but w/o any social media and was thinking about switching to an old phone for quite some time now. Is this a germany problem or is this going to happen anywhere eventually? I always assumed 3G would still work, like it‘s sort of backwards compatible

Happen everywhere. They're making room for the 5G that nobody asked for (or needs). There's only so much bandwidth and it's gotta be shared apparently. I also was blissfully ignorant before learning this, and of the same assumption as you.

For anyone interested, I was (blissfully) able to use my old GSM/3G phone perfectly fine during the whole Fusion. No idea which of the networks it used, but the point is it functioned.

It was GSM (2G) for sure 3G is already shutdown, and GSM is about to shutdown in Germany in 2028 as well.
Here the current statement from the Federal Network Agency (Bundenetzagentur):

"Abschaltung der 2G-Mobilfunknetze in Deutschland
Bereits seit mehr als 30 Jahren wird die 2G-Mobilfunktechnik in Deutschland für Sprach- und Datenverbindungen genutzt. 2G, auch bekannt als Global System for Mobile Communications, kurz GSM, war in den 90er Jahren des letzten Jahrtausends eine leistungsfähige Technologie und sorgte maßgeblich dafür, dass der Mobilfunk massentauglich wurde. Mittlerweile ist 2G jedoch veraltet und mit 4G und 5G stehen aktuelle Mobilfunktechnologien bereit, welche um ein Vielfaches effizienter und leistungsfähiger sind. Daher ist absehbar, dass die noch verbliebenen 2G-Mobilfunknetze in den nächsten Jahren weltweit zugunsten moderner Technologien nach und nach abgeschaltet werden.
Die Netzbetreiber Telekom, Vodafone und Telefónica haben bekanntgegeben, dass sie ihre 2G-Netze voraussichtlich im Jahr 2028 abschalten werden. That means 2028 will be the last Fusion to use GSM as of today.

TYVM, still happy I'll get one last dance. The pensioner's phone I've had to acquire to operate on 4G was absolutely hopeless (ex: voice message from 3 min max to 13 s, and for some reason many ppl couldn't receive my MMSs anyway), and a smartphone is out of question for 100 other reasons.
